A burning oil smell coming from a car is usually caused by engine oil leaking onto hot engine components. When oil comes into contact with hot parts such as the exhaust manifold, turbo housing or engine block, it can produce a noticeable burning smell.
Drivers may notice the smell after driving when the engine has reached full operating temperature. In some cases the smell may also enter the cabin through the ventilation system, particularly if the leak occurs near the rear of the engine.

Other possible causes include worn engine seals, turbo oil leaks or damaged oil lines. If the smell is accompanied by smoke from the engine bay, oil spots under the vehicle or a falling oil level, the vehicle should be inspected promptly.
Ignoring oil leaks can eventually lead to low oil levels which may cause serious engine damage.
