If your car overheats while idling but the temperature returns to normal when driving, the issue is often related to airflow or coolant circulation within the cooling system. When a vehicle is moving, air naturally flows through the radiator which helps remove heat from the engine. However, when the vehicle is stationary the cooling system must rely on other components to maintain safe temperatures.

The radiator fan is responsible for pulling air through the radiator when the vehicle is not moving fast enough for natural airflow to occur. If the fan motor fails, the relay stops working or the temperature sensor is faulty, the fan may not activate when required.
Without the radiator fan operating correctly, heat can quickly build up in the engine while the vehicle is stationary or stuck in traffic.
Coolant plays a critical role in regulating engine temperature. It absorbs heat from the engine and transfers it to the radiator where it can be dissipated.
If coolant levels drop due to leaks, evaporation or poor maintenance, the system may not be able to remove enough heat from the engine while idling.
A partially blocked radiator or restricted coolant passages can reduce the efficiency of the cooling system. Internal corrosion, debris or sediment buildup may prevent coolant from circulating properly.
When coolant flow is restricted the engine may overheat more quickly, especially when the vehicle is stationary.
The water pump circulates coolant throughout the engine and radiator. If the pump becomes worn or damaged the coolant may not move efficiently through the cooling system. This can cause heat to build up when the engine is running at idle speeds.
Because several components are involved in regulating engine temperature, diagnosing the exact cause often requires checking multiple parts of the cooling system.
