The diesel particulate filter (DPF) warning light indicates that the vehicle’s emissions control system has detected a problem with the diesel particulate filter. The DPF is responsible for trapping soot particles produced during diesel combustion to reduce harmful emissions.
Over time the filter gradually fills with soot and must perform a process known as regeneration. During regeneration the engine raises exhaust temperatures to burn off the trapped soot. If this regeneration process fails or does not occur regularly, the filter can become restricted and the DPF warning light may illuminate.
In many situations the vehicle can still be driven when the DPF light first appears. The system may simply be requesting a regeneration cycle. Driving at a steady speed on a motorway or dual carriageway for around 15–20 minutes can sometimes allow the vehicle to complete regeneration and clear the warning light.
However, if the vehicle continues to be driven only on short journeys, the filter may become increasingly blocked.
If the DPF light remains on for an extended period or the vehicle enters reduced power mode, it may indicate that the filter is heavily restricted. Continuing to drive with a severely blocked filter can increase exhaust pressure and potentially damage the turbocharger or engine components.
Short journeys and stop-start driving are the most common causes of DPF issues. Diesel engines require sustained driving conditions to perform proper regeneration cycles. Other possible causes include faulty differential pressure sensors, exhaust leaks, temperature sensor faults or problems within the engine management system.
