Car Hesitates When Accelerating?

The throttle body controls the volume of air entering the engine. Carbon deposits build up on the throttle plate over time — particularly on engines with direct injection which lack the cleaning effect of fuel washing over the intake. A dirty throttle body causes hesitation on initial acceleration and an unstable idle. Cleaning with throttle body cleaner spray is often all that is needed.

A weak fuel pump or blocked fuel filter starves the engine of fuel under load — causing hesitation particularly when accelerating hard or going uphill. The symptom often appears or worsens at higher speeds or under sustained load. A fuel pressure test confirms whether delivery is adequate.

The mass airflow sensor tells the ECU how much air is entering the engine. Contamination from oil mist or general dirt causes incorrect readings — the ECU then miscalculates fuel delivery causing hesitation and poor economy. Specialist MAF sensor cleaner often resolves the issue without replacement.

On petrol engines worn plugs and failing coilpacks cause intermittent misfires felt as hesitation. The symptom is often worse under acceleration because the ignition system is under greater demand. Replacement of plugs and coils is straightforward and relatively inexpensive.

The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases back into the intake. A stuck-open EGR valve dilutes the intake charge excessively — causing poor throttle response and hesitation particularly from low revs. More common on diesel engines with high mileage. Cleaning or replacement of the EGR valve resolves the issue.
