What Causes This on UK Cars
The exact cause depends on your make, model, year and mileage. These are the most common faults that produce this symptom — listed in order of probability on most UK vehicles.
Faulty Spark Plugs or Coilpacks
Worn or fouled spark plugs are the most common cause of jerking under acceleration on petrol engines. When a plug fails to fire consistently the cylinder misfires — felt as a jerk or stumble. Coilpacks deliver the high voltage needed to fire the plug; a failing coilpack causes the same symptom. Both are relatively cheap to fix and should be the first thing checked on any petrol engine that jerks.
Dirty or Blocked Fuel Injectors
Fuel injectors spray a precise mist of fuel into the engine. When they become partially blocked — from carbon deposits or poor quality fuel — the spray pattern breaks down and fuel delivery becomes uneven. This causes hesitation and jerking particularly under load. Injector cleaner additives can help mild cases; severe blockages require professional ultrasonic cleaning or replacement.
Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) Fault
The MAF sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine so the ECU can calculate the correct fuel quantity. A dirty or failing MAF sensor sends incorrect data causing the engine to run too rich or too lean — producing jerking, hesitation and poor economy. Cleaning the sensor with specialist MAF cleaner resolves the fault in around 30% of cases. Otherwise replacement is required.
Blocked Catalytic Converter
A partially blocked catalytic converter restricts exhaust flow — creating back pressure that reduces engine breathing and causes hesitation under acceleration. The symptom is typically worse at higher revs. The catalytic converter can block from oil burning, failed injectors or a rich-running engine that has been left undiagnosed. Replacement is expensive but the underlying cause must also be fixed.
Transmission or Clutch Issue
On manual vehicles a slipping or worn clutch causes a jerking sensation as the clutch cannot transfer power smoothly. On automatic vehicles a failing torque converter or worn transmission solenoid produces a similar jerk — often felt as a lurch when changing gear. Dual-clutch (DSG/DCT) gearboxes are particularly prone to juddering at low speeds.
