What Is a Track Rod End?

The track rod end — also called a tie rod end — is a ball-jointed connector that links the end of the steering rack track rod to the steering arm on the wheel hub. It allows the steering input from the rack to be transmitted to the wheel while accommodating the vertical movement of the suspension. The ball joint inside the track rod end allows multi-axis movement and is protected by a rubber boot. Both inner and outer track rod ends are present on each side of the steering rack.

What Does the Track Rod End Do?

Track rod ends allow the steering input from the rack to be transmitted to the wheels while accommodating suspension movement and road inputs. They are a critical link in the steering chain — if a track rod end fails completely, the vehicle loses steering control of the affected wheel. Worn track rod ends cause vague or imprecise steering, wandering, excessive play at the steering wheel and abnormal tyre wear.

Symptoms of a Failing Track Rod End

Worn track rod ends cause a knocking or clicking noise from the front of the vehicle, particularly when turning or going over bumps. Excessive play at the steering wheel, the vehicle wandering or pulling, and abnormal tyre wear on the inner or outer edge are all common symptoms. Wheel alignment cannot be set correctly if track rod ends are worn — always replace before aligning.

When Should the Track Rod End Be Replaced?

Track rod ends are replaced on wear or failure. They are checked at every MOT — excessive play is an MOT failure. Replacement cost ranges from £60 to £150 per side including wheel alignment adjustment, which must always be performed after replacement.

If you are experiencing symptoms related to your track rod end and are unsure whether it needs replacing, a free MotorLoom fault scan can help identify whether the component is likely at fault - giving you the most likely cause and estimated repair cost before you visit a garage.
