What Is a Anti-Roll Bar & Drop Links?
The anti-roll bar — also called a stabiliser bar or sway bar — is a torsional spring that connects the left and right sides of the suspension through the vehicle subframe. Drop links (also called end links) connect each end of the anti-roll bar to the suspension strut or lower arm. When one wheel rises (in a corner, for example), the bar twists and applies a counteracting force to the opposite wheel, reducing the amount the body rolls.
What Does the Anti-Roll Bar & Drop Links Do?
Body roll in corners transfers weight to the outside wheels, reducing grip on the inside wheels and making the vehicle feel unstable and unpredictable. The anti-roll bar minimises this by linking both sides of the suspension, so that compression on one side is partially transmitted to the other. Stiffer anti-roll bars reduce body roll further but can compromise ride quality and independent wheel movement.

Worn anti-roll bar drop links are one of the most common causes of knocking and rattling noises over bumps — particularly at low speed. The noise is typically heard from under the front of the vehicle and worsens over speed bumps or rough road surfaces. Worn drop links are one of the most frequent MOT advisories on higher-mileage vehicles. Worn anti-roll bar bushes produce a clunking noise particularly when cornering.
When Should the Anti-Roll Bar & Drop Links Be Replaced?
Drop links are consumable items that should be inspected at every service and replaced when worn or noisy. They are inexpensive parts — typically £15 to £40 each — with moderate labour costs. Anti-roll bar bushes typically last longer but should be replaced when they crack or split. Replacement of both drop links costs £60 to £160 at an independent garage.
