What Is a Lambda Sensor (Oxygen Sensor)?
The lambda sensor — also called an oxygen sensor or O2 sensor — is screwed into the exhaust manifold or downpipe and measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. Most modern vehicles have at least two lambda sensors — an upstream sensor (before the catalytic converter) which provides real-time feedback for mixture control, and a downstream sensor (after the catalytic converter) which monitors converter efficiency. The sensor generates a voltage signal that varies with oxygen content.
What Does the Lambda Sensor (Oxygen Sensor) Do?
The lambda sensor provides continuous feedback to the engine management ECU about combustion quality. If the mixture is too rich (too much fuel), oxygen in the exhaust is low and the sensor signals the ECU to reduce fuel injection. If the mixture is too lean (too little fuel), oxygen is high and the ECU increases injection. This closed-loop control maintains the precise air-fuel ratio needed for efficient combustion and effective catalytic converter operation.

A failed lambda sensor causes the engine management light to illuminate and typically stores an O2 sensor fault code. Symptoms include increased fuel consumption, rough running, failed emissions tests, black exhaust smoke and in some cases the engine entering a limp mode. A faulty downstream sensor may cause the ECU to incorrectly diagnose a failing catalytic converter.
When Should the Lambda Sensor (Oxygen Sensor) Be Replaced?
Lambda sensors are replaced on failure. They typically last 60,000 to 100,000 miles before wear causes inaccurate readings. Always identify which sensor is faulty (upstream or downstream, left or right bank) before replacement — they are different parts at different prices.
If you are experiencing symptoms related to your lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) and are unsure whether it needs replacing, a free MotorLoom fault scan can help identify whether the component is likely at fault - giving you the most likely cause and estimated repair cost before you visit a garage.
