What Is a EGR Valve?
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is an emissions control component that routes a controlled proportion of exhaust gases back into the intake manifold to be burned again in the combustion cycle. By diluting the intake charge with inert exhaust gas, combustion temperatures are reduced, which lowers the production of nitrogen oxides (NOx) — harmful pollutants regulated by emissions legislation. EGR systems are found on most modern diesel engines and many petrol engines.
What Does the EGR Valve Do?
EGR reduces NOx emissions by lowering peak combustion temperatures. This is achieved by displacing some of the oxygen-rich intake air with inert recirculated exhaust gas, reducing the rate of combustion. While effective at reducing NOx, EGR also introduces carbon deposits into the intake manifold and throttle body over time — particularly on diesel engines — requiring periodic cleaning or replacement of the valve.

A stuck-open EGR valve causes rough idling, loss of power, increased fuel consumption and black smoke. A stuck-closed EGR valve causes increased NOx emissions, potential overheating and an engine management light. Carbon deposits on the valve cause it to stick in intermediate positions, causing erratic running. The symptoms are similar to several other intake-related faults, making diagnosis important before replacement.
When Should the EGR Valve Be Replaced?
EGR valves do not have a fixed replacement interval — they are replaced on failure. Cleaning is sometimes possible on valves with moderate carbon buildup. Vehicles used predominantly for short journeys are most susceptible to EGR fouling, as the engine never reaches the sustained temperature needed to burn off carbon deposits.
