What Causes This on UK Cars
The exact cause depends on your make, model, year and mileage. These are the most common faults that produce a squealing noise when braking — listed in order of probability on most UK vehicles.
Squealing isn't the same as grinding. A squeal is usually an early warning sign — the pads and disc are still fine. A grinding or scraping sound is more serious and means metal is likely already in contact with metal. If your brakes have started grinding,

Brake Pad Wear Indicator
Most brake pads have a small metal tab built into the friction material. Once the pad wears down to a few millimetres, that tab starts touching the disc and produces a sharp, high-pitched squeal — usually only while braking. It's a built-in early warning, not a failure: the pads still work, but they're due for replacement soon before they wear through completely.
Glazed Brake Pads
Repeated hard braking, or a habit of resting your foot lightly on the brake, builds up heat and hardens the surface of the pad. Glazed pads lose some of their grip and often squeal, especially on the first firm stop of a journey. It doesn't always mean new pads are needed, but braking performance is reduced until it's addressed.
Morning Rust Film or Road Dust
A light layer of surface rust forms on the discs overnight, especially in damp or humid UK weather, or after the car's been sitting. The first few brake applications scrub it off and the squeal disappears for the rest of the day. This is normal wear and not something to worry about on its own.
Low-Quality or Mismatched Pads
Some budget aftermarket pad compounds are simply noisier by design, and will squeal even when otherwise working correctly. This is especially common shortly after a cheap pad replacement. It's a comfort issue rather than a safety one, but worth mentioning if you've had recent brake work done.
Worn or Missing Anti-Squeal Hardware
Pads are fitted with small shims or clips that stop them vibrating against the caliper. If this hardware is worn, rusted or was left out during a previous brake job, the pad can vibrate at high frequency under light braking — producing a persistent squeal that has nothing to do with pad thickness.
