A whining noise that increases with steering input — particularly on full lock — is the classic sign of a power steering pump fault. Low power steering fluid causes the pump to whine as it works harder. A pump that whines even with correct fluid level is beginning to fail internally. Check the fluid level first before assuming the pump needs replacement.

A failing wheel bearing produces a low whining, humming or growling noise that changes with vehicle speed and often changes pitch when changing lanes or cornering. The noise is typically louder on the side of the failing bearing. A simple test — if the noise reduces when steering gently to the left the right bearing is likely at fault and vice versa. Wheel bearings are safety-critical components.

Turbocharged engines make a characteristic whistling or whining sound under boost which is normal. An unusual change in this sound — particularly a high-pitched screech or grinding whine — indicates a turbo bearing fault. Oil starvation from infrequent oil changes is the leading cause of premature turbo bearing failure.

The alternator is driven by a belt from the crankshaft and contains bearings that can fail — producing a high-pitched whining or grinding noise that increases with engine speed. The noise may be accompanied by a battery warning light as the alternator output drops. The alternator belt and tensioner should be replaced at the same time.

A whining noise that is specifically present under acceleration and reduces or changes when coasting points to the gearbox or differential. This type of whine typically indicates worn gears or bearings inside the unit. Early diagnosis prevents a minor repair becoming a full gearbox replacement.
