What Is a Fuel Filter?

The fuel filter is a small canister containing a fine mesh or paper element that filters petrol or diesel fuel as it flows from the tank to the engine. On older vehicles it is usually an inline unit visible under the bonnet or beneath the car. On many modern vehicles it is integrated inside the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. Diesel vehicles typically have additional fuel filters — often with a water separator — due to the higher contamination risk of diesel fuel.

What Does the Fuel Filter Do?

Fuel tanks, pipework and injectors are vulnerable to contamination from rust, sediment, water and fine particles. The fuel filter traps these contaminants before they can reach the high-precision fuel injectors, whose spray holes are measured in microns. A blocked injector causes misfires, poor fuel economy and can require expensive replacement. The fuel filter is the injectors primary line of defence.

Symptoms of a Failing Fuel Filter

A restricted fuel filter starves the engine of fuel, particularly under load. Symptoms include hesitation or stumbling under acceleration, difficulty starting especially when hot, loss of power at higher speeds, engine misfires, and in severe cases the car cutting out completely. Diesel vehicles may also show increased smoke from the exhaust.

When Should the Fuel Filter Be Replaced?

External fuel filters should be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles or every two years. Many modern vehicles with in-tank filters are listed as lifetime items by manufacturers — however these can still block on high-mileage vehicles or those running on lower-quality fuel. If symptoms suggest fuel starvation, the filter should always be investigated.

If you are experiencing symptoms related to your fuel filter and are unsure whether it needs replacing, a free MotorLoom fault scan can help identify whether the component is likely at fault - giving you the most likely cause and estimated repair cost before you visit a garage.
