What Is a Brake Discs?

Brake discs — also called rotors — are circular metal components bolted to the wheel hub and rotating with the wheel. Most standard vehicles use solid or ventilated cast iron discs. Ventilated discs have internal cooling channels between the two friction faces to dissipate heat more effectively. Performance vehicles may use drilled or grooved discs for additional heat dissipation and pad degassing. The disc must maintain a minimum thickness to be safe — stamped on the disc or listed in technical data.

What Does the Brake Discs Do?

The brake disc provides the friction surface against which the brake pads clamp during braking. Its large surface area and thermal mass absorb the significant heat generated by braking. Ventilation keeps operating temperatures within safe limits during repeated heavy braking. The condition of the disc surface — whether scored, corroded or warped — directly affects braking performance, pedal feel and stopping distance.

Symptoms of a Failing Brake Discs

Worn or damaged brake discs cause vibration or pulsation through the brake pedal and steering wheel under braking, grinding noises, reduced braking efficiency, longer stopping distances and visible scoring or grooving on the disc face. Severely corroded discs — common after a vehicle has stood unused — can cause brake judder even before significant wear.

When Should the Brake Discs Be Replaced?

Brake discs are typically replaced at the same time as brake pads, particularly when discs have reached minimum thickness. Replacing pads on worn discs causes accelerated pad wear and poor braking performance. Front discs typically last 60,000 to 80,000 miles; rear discs often last longer. Cost per axle (both discs plus pads) typically ranges from £160 to £380 at an independent garage.

If you are experiencing symptoms related to your brake discs and are unsure whether it needs replacing, a free MotorLoom fault scan can help identify whether the component is likely at fault - giving you the most likely cause and estimated repair cost before you visit a garage.
