The traction control warning light indicates that the vehicle’s traction control system (TCS) or electronic stability control (ESC) is active or has detected a fault. This system helps prevent wheel spin when accelerating on slippery surfaces such as wet roads, snow or ice.
Traction control works by monitoring the speed of each wheel using sensors located at the wheels. If the system detects that one wheel is spinning faster than the others, it reduces engine power or applies braking to the affected wheel to restore traction.
The warning symbol usually looks like a car with wavy skid lines behind it. In many vehicles the light will flash briefly when the system is actively controlling wheel spin. This is normal behaviour and simply indicates the system is working to maintain grip.
However, if the traction control light stays illuminated continuously, it may indicate that the system has been disabled or that a fault has been detected. In some vehicles the driver can manually switch off traction control using a dashboard button.
Common causes of the traction control warning light include faulty wheel speed sensors, damaged sensor wiring or issues with the ABS system. Because the traction control system shares components with the anti-lock braking system, a fault in the ABS system may also trigger the traction control light.
Drivers may notice reduced stability or increased wheel spin when accelerating if the system is not functioning correctly. Although the vehicle can usually still be driven, the additional safety features provided by traction control may not be available.
If the traction control warning light remains on while driving, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected using diagnostic equipment. A diagnostic scan can identify stored fault codes and help determine whether a sensor or control module requires repair.
