Power Steering Warning Light

The power steering warning light indicates a problem with the vehicle’s steering assistance system. Modern vehicles use either hydraulic or electric power steering to make steering easier and more responsive. When this warning light appears it usually means the system has detected a fault that may reduce steering assistance.

The warning symbol often appears as a steering wheel icon with an exclamation mark beside it. In some vehicles the light may be yellow or amber, while in others it may appear red depending on the severity of the issue.

Power steering systems are designed to reduce the effort required to turn the steering wheel. Hydraulic systems use pressurised fluid to assist steering, while newer vehicles commonly use electric power steering (EPS) which relies on an electric motor controlled by the vehicle’s computer.

If the power steering warning light appears, drivers may notice that the steering wheel feels heavier than usual, especially at low speeds or when parking. This happens because the steering assistance system is no longer providing the same level of support.

One common cause of the warning light is low power steering fluid in vehicles with hydraulic steering systems. Fluid leaks from hoses, seals or the steering rack can cause the fluid level to drop, triggering the warning light.

In vehicles with electric power steering, the warning light may appear due to electrical faults such as a failed steering motor, faulty sensor or issues within the steering control module.

Although it is usually possible to continue driving the vehicle, steering may require more effort than normal. For safety reasons it is recommended to have the steering system inspected if the warning light remains illuminated.

A diagnostic scan can often identify the exact cause of the issue by reading stored fault codes within the vehicle’s steering control system.
