The engine coolant temperature warning light indicates that the engine is overheating or that the cooling system is not operating correctly. This warning light is extremely important because overheating can cause serious engine damage if it is ignored.
The coolant temperature warning symbol usually appears as a thermometer above wavy lines, representing liquid coolant. In many vehicles the light will appear in red when the engine temperature becomes dangerously high.
Modern engines operate within a carefully controlled temperature range. The cooling system circulates coolant through the engine to absorb heat and transfer it to the radiator where it is cooled by airflow. If any part of this system fails, the engine temperature can rise quickly.
One of the most common causes of the coolant warning light is low coolant level. Coolant can be lost through leaks in hoses, the radiator or the water pump. If the coolant level drops too low, the cooling system cannot effectively remove heat from the engine.
A faulty thermostat can also cause overheating. The thermostat regulates coolant flow through the engine. If it becomes stuck closed, coolant cannot circulate properly and the engine temperature may rise rapidly.
Other potential causes include a malfunctioning radiator fan, blocked radiator, damaged water pump or air trapped within the cooling system. In some cases the warning light may also appear due to a faulty temperature sensor.
If the coolant temperature warning light appears while driving, the safest action is to stop the vehicle as soon as possible and switch off the engine. Continuing to drive an overheating vehicle can cause severe engine damage including warped cylinder heads or blown head gaskets.
Once the engine has cooled down, the coolant level should be checked. If the problem persists, the vehicle should be inspected by a mechanic to identify the cause of the overheating.
