Airbag Warning Light

The airbag warning light indicates a problem with the vehicle’s supplemental restraint system (SRS). This system includes airbags, crash sensors, seatbelt pretensioners and the electronic control module responsible for deploying airbags during a collision. When the warning light appears on the dashboard it usually means the system has detected a fault that could prevent the airbags from operating correctly.

The airbag warning symbol typically shows a seated passenger with a circular airbag in front of them. In most vehicles the light appears briefly when the ignition is switched on as part of the system self-test. If the light remains on after the engine starts, it usually indicates a fault stored within the SRS control unit.

One common cause of the airbag warning light is a loose or damaged electrical connector beneath the driver or passenger seat. Many vehicles have wiring for seat sensors and seatbelt pretensioners in this area. Moving the seat backward or forward repeatedly can sometimes loosen these connectors.

Another possible cause is a faulty airbag sensor or crash sensor. These sensors monitor impact forces and communicate with the airbag control module during a collision. If the control unit detects an abnormal signal from one of these sensors it may trigger the warning light.

Battery issues can also sometimes trigger the airbag light. If the vehicle battery has been disconnected or voltage drops too low, the SRS module may store a fault code which requires resetting with diagnostic equipment.

Although the vehicle can usually still be driven when the airbag warning light is illuminated, it is important to understand that the airbags may not deploy correctly during a crash. For safety reasons the system should be inspected as soon as possible.

A diagnostic scan using an OBD tool or professional diagnostic equipment is normally required to read the stored fault code and determine the exact cause of the problem.
