A diesel particulate filter, commonly referred to as a DPF, is an emissions control device fitted to most modern diesel vehicles. Its primary purpose is to capture and store soot particles produced during diesel combustion before they exit the vehicle’s exhaust system.
Diesel engines naturally produce microscopic particles of carbon during the combustion process. Without a filtration system, these particles would be released into the atmosphere through the exhaust.
The DPF is located within the exhaust system and contains a ceramic honeycomb structure designed to trap soot particles while still allowing exhaust gases to flow through the system.
Over time soot builds up inside the filter. To prevent blockage the vehicle performs regeneration, where exhaust temperatures rise high enough to burn off the trapped soot.
Vehicles that regularly travel longer distances tend to regenerate successfully. Cars used mainly for short urban trips may struggle to regenerate properly, which can cause the filter to become blocked.
The name of the component gives a good indication of its function: it is a filter designed specifically for diesel engines that removes particulate matter, meaning tiny solid particles of soot, from the exhaust stream before it leaves the vehicle. Every diesel car, van and SUV sold in the UK since the introduction of Euro 5 emissions rules has been fitted with one of these units as standard.
