Engine Management Light

The engine management light, often called the check engine light, is one of the most common dashboard warning lights drivers encounter. This light indicates that the vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) has detected a fault within the engine management system.

Modern vehicles rely on a network of sensors and electronic systems to monitor engine performance and emissions. When one of these sensors detects a reading outside its normal operating range, the ECU stores a fault code and triggers the engine management warning light on the dashboard.

The colour of the warning light can help indicate the severity of the problem. A solid amber or yellow engine management light usually means the vehicle can still be driven but should be checked as soon as possible. However, if the light begins flashing or is accompanied by a loss of power, the vehicle may have a more serious issue that requires immediate attention.

There are many possible causes for the engine management light appearing. Some common causes include faulty oxygen sensors, ignition coil problems, fuel injector issues, catalytic converter faults or problems with the exhaust emissions system. In diesel vehicles, a blocked diesel particulate filter can also trigger the engine management light.

Drivers may also notice other symptoms alongside the warning light. These can include reduced engine power, rough running, poor fuel economy or unusual engine noises. In some cases the vehicle may enter limp mode to protect the engine from further damage.

Because the engine management system monitors many different components, the only reliable way to determine the exact cause of the warning light is to read the diagnostic fault codes stored in the vehicle’s ECU. This can be done using an OBD diagnostic scanner or by a professional garage.

If the engine management light remains illuminated for an extended period, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected to prevent potential damage or increased repair costs.
